How to Make Doily Place Card Holders
An antique doily gets a modern twist by using it as a place card holder in a modern place setting. It's simple to do and will add a vintage touch to your Thanksgiving or Christmas table.
Step 1: Mix equal parts of glue and water in disposable bowl. Completely soak the doily in this mixture.

*I tried using liquid starch but it did not stiffen as well as the glue and water mixture.
Step 2: Place the wet doily over a book to dry. Cover the book and counter with wax paper to protect it.

Step 3: Leave the doily to dry overnight. If you are impatient, place it in front of a space heater and get the job done in an hour or two. When the doily is almost dry take it off of the book and crease the fold and bend the bottom to create feet.

Step 4: Embellish with names written on scrapbook paper and other items to create one of a kind place card holders for your dinner guests.

Add a sprig of evergreen during Christmas or a fall leave during Thanksgiving.

Use an old photograph as a conversation starter.

Besides designating place settings place card holders can hold an interesting quote for each guest or a game card from a favorite trivia game. They also work wonderfully for labeling food in a buffet line.
When I created my first doily place card holder, I used liquid starch. It did not work as well to make the doily stiff. So I used it in a different way by putting scrapbook paper underneath to support it. A small vintage Christmas bulb and gingham ribbon add a festive touch for this Holiday luncheon.

Use found objects like an old key or watch face to personalize each place card.
