Photography Using a Wood Box---Tips for Online Sellers

As an online seller, I take photos of vintage items and my designs on a daily basis. I usually take pictures in my screen porch because of the great natural light. But living in Wisconsin where it is going to be a high of 19 degrees today, I've had to develop another method. I use a large, antique box for backgrounds for my product shots.

Let me show you what I mean...

I set the box on a tabletop next to a window for lots of natural light. There are basically 3 different surfaces of the box to use for photos. Turn the box upside down as shown in the picture above. It  gives a look like this one that says, "weathered, barny, beachy" which is perfect asthetic for my brand, Upscale Downhome.

I just used it to shoot  photos of my winter antler sets.

The box has some fabulous vintage typography on the sides which gives an unique background for close-up product shots.

I used it to shoot these vintage Delizza and Elster bracelet and earrings.

Lastly, use the inside of the box for a backdrop. No need to worry about anyone seeing that clutter on your kitchen counter! There's not a real large depth of field but it works great for smaller items.

I could party in a cardboard box with people who are funny and don't care. For me, it's really about who I surround myself with, so I just try to always be with hilarious people.
